Me and Jenni at the zoo

Me and Jenni at the zoo

Today’s inspiration is friends.

A wee bit OTT, but who cares, these are the people who make life just that bit more interesting and enjoyable.

I find  myself quiet blessed with the group of friends that I have. Most of my friends are people with similar interests to me and are friends with each other and also with my husband Paul, which helps a lot in going to gatherings etc.

Looking through my facebook page, I can certainly see the different groups of friends that I have.

Firstly there are the family friends, these are the friends made through the mutual friendships of our parents, I even class these parents as friends to…people I know I can turn to if needed.

Secondly is the group of friends I still have from high school. As a teenager I moved during my high school years so went to two different schools. My first school, I don’t have to many friends that I stay in touch with, except for one really great friend, whom every since I moved have stayed in contact with, even if it is a phone call once a year, or a text message just to say hi. When we do catch up we have lots to talk about and it feels like we only saw each other just the other day. Though it was only last year that we actually got to physically see each other after  almost twelve years…it was one of the best days.

The other school friends I have from this school, I have only recently got back in touch with, through the power of the internet and social networking…one of the many reasons I love facebook.

At my second school, the group of friends I have from there I never lost contact with once school finished…partly cause most of them stay in the same city for university or we worked with each other and also had similar hobbies that kept us connected.

My third group of friends are those I made through my interests, choir friends from my days of being part of the Waikato Youth Choir,  my LARP friends…I was that geeky that I joined in with life action role playing…extremely sociable what with running around a park with foam padded weaponry and mock fighting with mates. I no longer do this activity as I moved away…that’s not to say I still don’t do incredibly geeky things now.

My forth group are uni friends….funny things is though these are not friends made through classes and tutorials…in fact I don’t think I really made friends with any of those people…no these are the friends I made at uni, by joining a uni club or more specifically the games club. Where I could be as geeky as I liked and hang out with like minded people…it then made it a simple transition to then hang out with them out side of the club too. Non of these people took the same courses as me.

From this group has merged my fifth group of friends…everyone else, but these are the people whom I have met through gaming, but met outside of uni. It is through our mutual love of story telling and hanging out with good people that after getting to know them, we actually have other things in common, such as doing crafts, like playing rockband, just talking and a  multitude of other interests.

My last group of friends are well my best friends, these are the people who are most important to me, other than my family. First there is Paul, my husband, my friend and the person who really knows me in all my insanity and still loves me and put up with me…Every one who has a life partner, is a lucky person. To know that there is someone who truly loves you for all your faults and will continue to do so.

Then there is Catherine, we meet through Choir and taking the same courses at polytech…we don’t always agree on everything, but she is one of these people whom I loved having in my life…and though we don’t get to see each other very often when we do, we have the best time.

Helena is my baby ( not literally) I lived with her for a year, she was my maid of honour at my wedding, I love hanging out with her, we are so  like minded and into pretty much the same things, despite our age difference, she’s the person I know I can bitch about everything with, and I know she wont take offence and will just listen and she knows that she can do the same with me too.

And then there’s my mum…a lot of people don’t class their parents as friends but I do… as I’ve gotten older, the more of a friendship I’ve developed with my mum as well as my dad…but he falls into a category all of his own. Mum is someone I can shop with, have coffee with, sit and chat, just like a friend, but I also have the added benefit of being daughter and mother at the same time, something I truly treasure.

I feel I am truly blessed to have met so  many wonderful people, who have become such good friends to me. I can only hope that our friendships will last and that we will continue to have fun, great conversations and enjoy life together.

Take time to think of your friends, the ones who are precious to you, and those you just love hanging out with or those you haven’t seen or spoken to in awhile… get in touch and let them know that they are awesome.

Just a side note: this is why I love facebook and twitter…it helps me keep in touch with those friends who are far away from me…as I’m terrible at phone calls and emails.
